But Manhattan and the Flint Hills region is my favorite part of Kansas. There are areas with money, but most of the Flint hills are small towns and middle class rural areas. A lot of friendly retired people who move from Topeka or KC. I've never had problems with bad cops, thugs, and drug usage around manhattan is low.

It's still politically conservative, but a bit more moderate then the average Kansas region. I have had a few gay friends grow up here and none ever had issues, one lives in Manhattan and the rest moved out of state. Most of the people around here are more compassionate then condemning, gay they won't yell and say your going to hell for being gay.

Many people may show some shock, but then be friendly enough and maybe invite you to church to save your soul. I'm an atheist and we are in the same boat as gays, just be yourself and don't go around trying to tick people off. You'll be fine. Originally Posted by Mattks.

Gay Nightlife in Manhattan (Kansas)

I lived off-campus with a dog and was independent. Most of the people are friendly, but not very tolerant. If you are white, you will do better than some other people. If you are not Protestant, keep that to yourself. The only problem I had was with a neighbor who was in the military.

I'm sure this doesn't represent everyone in Fort Riley, but these people were quite backwards. And it is best to avoid any contact with the police. The stories told in movies about small-town officers are not that far from the truth.
